What if I don’t want to use Petroleum Jelly as a lubricant?
If you don’t want to use a petroleum-based product on
your skin, you can use 100% pure vegetable shortening. We would be happy to
supply you with 100% pure vegetable shortening; when you order your kit just
give us a call and make the request.
Some places offer a kit without gesso, is it really necessary?
We feel it is. Gesso is a primer/sealant that prepares
the cast’s surface for any type of decorating. Even if you choose not to
decorate, it protects and creates a nice finish.
When during my pregnancy is the best time to make the cast?
Most women wait until the last month of pregnancy; some
even wait until 2 weeks before the due date, hoping to get an impression of
their belly at its largest. You can do it at anytime if there is reason to
believe the baby will come before the due date, your pregnancy is high risk, or
you don’t want to chance that the baby will come before you make the Belly
Cast. Some women document their entire pregnancy making a cast for each
trimester.
What if the baby comes before the Belly Cast Kit does?
Just call or email for a return authorization. We will
gladly refund your money for unopened/unused Belly Cast Kits.
What do I do with my belly cast?
Most people hang it in the baby’s room, but others
find interesting ways in which to display theirs. One customer finished both
sides of the cast and used it upside down to store diapers and baby supplies in.
Another woman made hers into a planter on the wall. People sometimes set the
cast around the pot of a large floor plant. This makes an interesting
conversation piece.
I’m not artistic; how can I decorate my cast?
The possibilities are endless, but here are a few ideas….
- Your Birth Connection has a professional artist who
creates the designs on some of the bellies in our gallery. Women often send
the finished belly cast back and contract with her to create a custom
design.
- Decoupage is fun and easy and doesn’t take the
talent of an artist. One woman cut out pictures from an old Victorian
calendar and decoupaged them on the cast then used lace around the top.
Printed tissue paper, any kind of paper, photographs, and fabric all work
well with decoupage.
- Glue button, stones, feathers, and sequins on to a
painted cast.
- Painting the belly cast is easy to do. We recommend
acrylic paints (which can be purchased in the craft department) or spray
paint that comes in many varieties including textures and multi colors.
Tempera paint may crack and dry. It is not recommended.
- Sponge painting is easy and creates texture.
- Bringing a finished cast to your baby shower for
everyone to autograph and later decoupage photographs of the people who
attended, the cake, and all the gifts will create a special memoir of the
day.
- You can capture the amazing the growth of your baby’s
hands and feet in his/her first year, by printing them onto the cast at
monthly intervals.
Each belly cast is a unique creation of
your own design.
