WHO IS THIS WORKSHOP FOR?
|
|
Childbirth Educators, L&D nurses, Midwifery students, Massage Therapists,
Hypnotherapists, or any women who desires to support a laboring woman and partner during
this incredible passage.
|
WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW PRIOR TO WORKSHOP
|
|
Physiology of pregnancy, birth, postpartum, and breastfeeding.
Medical terminology as it relates to labor and birth.
Common practice of tests, procedures, and interventions, their risks and benefits
before, during, and after birth.
Options in pain medication: their use and effects (pros and cons).
The cesarean birth -- why it is sometimes necessary (or not).
Normal appearance of the newborn.
Basic relaxation techniques, appropriate breathing style, and comfort measures that are
beneficial.

If you do not have a background in labor and birth it is strongly
recommended that you sit through a complete childbirth series of your choice with a
reputable educator. Non-hospital affiliated childbirth educators are acceptable.It is also recommended that the required text be read prior to the gathering.

CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS
|
|
Be a member of DONA
Required reading from DONA list
Complete one of the following:
Training in childbirth education or midwifery
Nurses with work experience in labor and delivery
Observe a childbirth preparation series (not as an expectant parent)
Attend a DONA-approved labor support (doula) workshop of 16 or more hours
Documentation and evaluations from 3 births
Written essay
Develop and submit a resource list
Submit at least one of the following:
Proof of completion of lactation consultant, breastfeeding peer counselor
or community breastfeeding educator training.
Proof of completion of an online study program. Lactation Education Resources
offers a basic, "Complete Self-Learning Program" that is affordably priced.

Proof of participation in a breastfeeding workshop offered to birth and postpartum
related professionals, such as those offered at conferences and by local lactation
consultants (three hour minimum). If you purchase a packet on or after 12/1/07, the
workshop must be taught by an educator with recognized breastfeeding credentials
(IBCLC, CLE or CLC).
